Today, at the 70th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health and Massachusetts General Hospital present their findings that the consumption fruits and vegetables with high levels of pesticide residue can affect sperm quality, while IVF fertilization rates are better for those men consuming more fruits and vegetables over all.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its 2012 sexually transmitted disease (STD) surveillance data. This annual report of statistics and trends for three reportable sexually transmitted diseases in the United States (chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis) shows that STD rates for all three diseases continue to increase.

The AMA has created a toolkit to help physicians navigate the sweeping new revisions to the federal privacy and security rules for health information that go into effect on Sept. 23, 2013. The Department of Health and Human Services issued a final rule in January that revises and extends required safeguards for protected health information established under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.

As Members of Congress return to work after their month long August recess, ASRM has joined the Working Group on Pharmaceutical Safety in its call to Congress to close loopholes in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) which have allowed for the unsafe manufacturing of drugs by compounding pharmacies. The practices have resulted in serious disease outbreaks and over 60 deaths.
